My close friends know I have a passion for anime, manga and live action dramas. When you find a good series in any of these categories you will most likely find it in another. I usually find the anime first and when I blow through that I read the manga…and if I’m waiting for a new chapter to come out I will watch the TV drama. Ok, I’m not going to hide it. I LOVE cartoons! The drawing style of these anime and graphic novels are what cartoons/comics should be. These are must sees and perhaps you will soon understand my utter love for these titles.
This title comes in Anime, Manga and two Live Action Japanese Movies (which are a must see if you love the anime)
I love this one! It follows the struggle of a young girl, Nana Komatsu, coming of age. She has to work through the emotional struggle of getting over an old love, finding new love and deciding between pursuing the “good” man in her life or the bad boy of her dreams. Through happenstance she meets Nana Osaki an alternative chic, a little rough around the edges, who is pursuing her dream of being a rock goddess. She struggles with her love of stardom and her lover from the past who went on to make his way in the industry. Through their adventures the two Nanas become the best of friends but are they willing to sacrifice everything to have their dreams?
This title is in Anime, Manga and a Live Action Japanese Movie also know as “Paradaisu Kisu”
Yukari, a serious high school student, follows the straight and narrow path her parents have laid before. That is until she is “discovered” on the street by a fashion student. She thinks she has stumbled upon the land of the misfits but fall in love with the magic, beauty and passion of their world. Speaking of passion, she become enamored with the leader, George, of their indie fashion label “Paradise Kiss”. George is voice overed in the English Dub version by Patrick Seitz who is one of my favorite voice over actors! To be honest I haven’t seen the movie yet but it is on my list of things to do.
Rating: Anime may be PG-13 but the manga is definitely Mature
This title is in Anime, Manga and a fairly new Live Action Taiwanese TV Drama called “Extravagant Challenge”
Kyoko was utterly devoted to her childhood crush, Shou, and followed him to Tokyo in hopes of helping him reach his dream of being a teen idol. She cooks, cleans and works three jobs to pay their rent but after over hearing Shou tell his manager that she is nothing more than a maid to him she goes ballistic. She is determined to get her revenge! Kyoko manages to enter the biggest competitors talent agency. She is determined to become the best actress in the industry. Can she manage to fall in love with acting and capture the heart of her companies lead actor? Seriously, this is one of the funnest romance comedy series I’ve seen in a while. The manga continue beyond where the anime and TV series leave off and man it is getting goooood!
Check them out and let me know what you think. If you’ve seen them comment on your thoughts. If you like these titles then I am sure you will also enjoy my book.
If you haven’t seen this video you have to watch this! In their self esteem promoting tradition Dove has produced a series of “Real Beauty Sketches” videos. These videos follow a sketch artist as he creates portraits of women describing themselves behind a privacy screen. After the woman leaves someone she has met earlier then describes her to the sketch artist from behind the screen. You simply will be amazed by the result!
Watch this, facebook it, share it with a woman you care about!
The new The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Exclusive Teaser Trailer has been released. If you know anything about The Hunger Games franchise you will be extremely excited to see it.
Several changes from the first film have occurred. Director Gary Ross who directed the first film has been replaced with Director Francis Lawrence who directed such films as Water For Elephants and I Am Legend. It is my impression from the trailer alone that this film, Catching Fire, will surpass the previous movie.
I was disappointed with the first movie over all. Particularly the costuming and makeup did not live up to my expectations. I read the books and they were okay. The writing was fine but not stellar but the idea, the storyline, was refreshing and different. (Not completely unique as many of you may remember reading “The Lottery” as a child) I saw the rare potential for the movie to surpass the book.
Ultimately the director is to blame. He, or she, is the captain of the crew and must lead them in the proper direction but Judianna Makovsky’s, Costume Designer of The Hunger Games, choices in costuming some rather lack luster and unflattering outfits left me wanting. Glenn Hetrick and Ve Neill, Expert Judges from the TV show Face Off, were the prosthetic makeup effects designers and creators. Ve Neill lead the team but was at the mercy of her director and costume designer. In interview she has stated that she was left to create her ideas without seeing the costuming first. Then in creative meetings she was told to tone it down and dial it back. Tone it down?! Are you kidding me? If you have read the book then you well know that the oddities within The Capitol are crucial to the story line. The heroine of the story, Katniss, is appalled at how the people there look. I felt that the makeup was not taken far enough in the first film.
Trish Summerville (seen above with her release of a photo of the wedding dress) is the costume designer for Catching Fire and already from the trailer I see a marked improvement both in costuming and makeup. Ve Neill has returned for this film but I think it is evident that she has been allowed to elevate her interpretation of the book. It is my hope that Francis Lawrence also improves the viewers experience watching the “games”. I do see that they are using hand-cam in the trailer but it is my hope that it isn’t over used with excessive quick cuts.
If you haven’t watched the trailer do so and judge for yourself. I know where I will be on the 22nd.

“Moonflower has something for everyone,” said Johnson. “Though I wrote the novel for young adult readers I think it will appeal to women of all ages. There are elements of fantasy, action and a love triangle. What’s not to love?” E.D.C. Johnson has spent the last decade as a public school art teacher and was inspired to make a novel that would entice young readers to open a novel. She used themes that are hot in current young adult fiction such as shapeshifters and romance, combined with original illustrations.
After Josephine Woods’ father dies of cancer, her mother up-roots the two of them and moves to the city. Josie hates her city life, but her teenage issues are of little consequence when they have a car accident and she wakes up in a strange land (reminiscent of Victorian Europe) alone. Lost, with her school backpack as the only connection to her world, Josie struggles to find her way home. She is found by Lucius Conrí, the son of a Marquess, who possesses royal blood and the gift to shift into a wolf’s form at will. Can the kind-hearted Lucius help her find her way while winning her love, or will she fall for Donovan Conrí his older, more serious brother and heir to the Conrí wealth?

I wasn’t feeling top notch today and spent a lot of time laying on the couch. My husband had a new cable provider installed the other day and I must say I hadn’t realized how much I missed the SYFY channel. During the school year I don’t watch very much TV, except for my DVRed shows, so summertime is kind of fun to catch up on what I’ve been missing. A lot of movies today but I can’t wait to watch the Haunted Collector and some other newer shows I haven’t seen. I can’t believe I totally missed the second season of FACE OFF. As an artist, with a minor in theatre, I have to express my absolute love for that show. It is simply amazing. I could see a second career in that :). Well, I, and my husband, have been trying to resolve some issues with the print version of my novel. It should be back in the publisher’s hot little hands by tomorrow…Tuesday at the latest.
