Check out our Book Review Blog:  Science Fiction and Such

I wanted to let all of you know why I haven’t been posting much of anything as of late.  Well, a friend (Liz) and I have been working on launching a book review blog called Science Fiction and Such.  Working as a team we went through a great deal of debate to make it a good meld of our personalities and want for a review blog.  I would love you you to check us out at http://sciencefictionandsuch.com/

We will review most genre of science fiction novels including YA but will stray away from erotica since we believe in keeping a clean as possible platform for our readers and the young adults in their lives.  We hope to touch on other topics such as TV, movies, costuming and more.

Of course you can find more information about us at our website but we would also love for you to LIKE our fan page on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ScienceFictionAndSuch and follow us on twitter https://twitter.com/SciFiandSuch

Thank you for your support as I add this new adventure to my plate of many tasks.

5 Tips for Writing Trilogies and an Awesome Giveaway

I usually don’t have guests on my blog but I’m just super excited to share this guest post on “5 Tips for Writing Trilogies” from author Jamie Ayres.  Keep reading after the post to see an exciting giveaway she organized in honor of her latest book release 18 TRUTHS.

“5 Tips for Writing Trilogies”

by

Jamie Ayres

1)    Don’t save anything for the swim back—you don’t want to drag out your story through book 2 and have your audience annoyed. Write book 1 and 2 as if you might never get the next book published. Yes, you can leave them wanting more (and should!), but also make sure each book can stand on its own.

2)    Have a big agenda! You have to identify where the NEW source of conflict will come from in each individual novel.

3)    Have a plan. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been in love with a trilogy and counted the days until book 3 came out . . . only to be sorely disappointed with the way it all ended. It’s not even about being different from what I expected. By all means, it’s not my story and authors have the right to end things however they wish. But often it seems like the author wrote the first two books never knowing how they wanted to end it all and just threw something together for book 3

4)    Don’t write yourself into a corner. Having a plan doesn’t mean you can’t change it if a better idea comes along. I had a few ideas for how I wanted to end my 18 Things trilogy, and honestly, it took me having a conversation with my three characters in the dark corner of my bedroom to figure out what they wanted me to do. I know I sound insane . . . but this leads me to my last point.

5)    Don’t try to force your own agenda. Sometimes my characters do things I don’t like, but my story isn’t about me. It’s about them. If I don’t write their natural reactions to things, my writing isn’t going to flow. Then I’ll find myself in the fetal position eating donuts. Never a good sign.

Jamie Ayres writes young adult paranormal love stories by night and teaches young adults as a Language Arts middle school teacher by day. When not at home on her laptop or at school, she can often be found at a local book store grabbing random children and reading to them. So far, she has not been arrested for this. Although she spent her youthful summers around Lake Michigan, she now lives in Florida with her prince charming, two children (sometimes three based on how Mr. Ayres is acting), and a basset hound. She really does have grandmothers named Olga and Gay but unlike her heroine, she’s thankfully not named after either one of them. She loves lazy pajama days, the first page of a good book, stupid funny movies, and sharing stories with fantastic people like you. Her books include the first two installments of her trilogy, 18 Things and 18 Truths. Visit her online via Twitter, Facebook, or at www.jamieayres.com.

 18things

With the lessons the 18 Things life list taught her engraved on her heart, Olga embarks on a new adventure as a spirit guide, but nothing prepares her for the chilling truths she’s learning along the way.

Wow, thanks for the wonderful tips Jamie.  You can find out more about Jamie Ayres and her books at these links below.

Synopsis:

After Josephine Woods’ father dies of cancer, her mother up-roots the two of them and moves to the city. Josie hates her city life, but her teenage issues are of little consequence when they have a car accident and she wakes up in a strange land (reminiscent of Victorian Europe) alone. Lost, with her school backpack as the only connection to her world, Josie struggles to find her way home. She is found by Lucius Conrí, the son of a Marquess, who possesses royal blood and the gift to shift into a wolf’s form at will. Can the kind-hearted Lucius help her find her way while winning her love, or will she fall for Donovan Conrí his older, more serious brother and heir to the Conrí wealth?
